About Granite & Quartz
Granite is an igneous rock composed of feldspar and quartz, with a small amount of mica and minor accessory minerals. Granite crystallizes from magma that cools slowly, deep below the earth’s surface. Granite, along with other crystalline rocks, constitutes the foundation of the continental masses, and it is the most common intrusive rock exposed at the earth’s surface.
Quartz is a man-made product that combines quartz and resin materials. Unlike granite, it requires no sealing, polishing, or reconditioning and is resistant to stains and scratches. Choose an elegant slab that is made to look like granite or marble, without the hassle.
-
Granite has greater strength than sandstone, slate, limestone, and marble making it the obvious choice for kitchen countertops where fats, acids and sharp objects abound. Faith Floors & More is also installing more granite and quartz countertops than ever before, as these products have become more affordable in recent years. Faith Floors will install your countertops and backsplash all at once for customer convenience.
-
Your choice of edge is no small detail. Choose one of our standard edges: full bullnose, demibullnose, 45% bevel or waterfall. To make more of a statement choose an upgraded profile which adds impact to the beauty of a natural stone slab surface and helps integrate it into the overall design of the room.
For granite countertop maintenance we recommend Ivory dish soap only because it is made without animal fats and is free of dies. Many other brands contain fats, dyes, and scents which will damage the stone, including Dove, Dawn and Antibacterial soaps. We suggest never using Windex on Granite, no matter what other people say, the ammonia reacts differently to different stones and can cause permanent streaking. Avoid using detergents that can be abrasive and contain chemicals high in acid or alkaline. Some stone cleaners have a petroleum or animal fat base which may alter the appearance of your stone, so be cautious when choosing products to use.

Stone & Quartz Quick Reference
What You Want to Know | Short Answer |
---|---|
Granite vs quartz | Granite is natural and unique with periodic sealing. Quartz is engineered, consistent, and does not need sealer. |
Do I need to seal it | Seal most granite on a schedule based on use. Skip sealer on quartz. |
Heat, stains, scratches | Granite tolerates brief heat. Quartz resists stains well. Use cutting boards for both. |
Common thickness | Kitchens often use 3 cm. Baths can use 2 cm with proper support. |
Edges and sinks | Eased and quarter-round edges reduce chips. Undermount sinks pair well with both. |
Lead time | Template, fabricate, install. Large kitchens with many cutouts take longer. |
Cleaning | Mild dish soap or stone-safe cleaner and a soft cloth. Avoid acids and abrasives. |

Granite comes from the earth as a solid slab with natural crystals and flowing veins. Every piece looks unique, which adds depth and character to a kitchen.
Quartz blends ground quartz with resins to create a nonporous surface with controlled color and pattern. You get a steady look across an island and perimeter tops.
Granite usually benefits from periodic sealing to help repel oil and wine. Quartz arrives ready for daily use without a sealer. Both materials handle family life when you follow simple care habits.

Quartz does not need sealing. Granite often performs best with a penetrating sealer applied on a cadence that matches use and porosity.
Run a quick water test on a clean spot. If droplets stop beading, apply a fresh coat and wipe off the excess.
Clean daily with mild dish soap or a stone-safe spray and a soft towel. Dry the surface to prevent streaks and keep the finish crisp. Wipe cooking oils and red wine right away so the counter always looks fresh.
These habits will make a big difference in the long run.
-
Granite handles brief contact with hot pans better than quartz, yet trivets still make sense near ovens and cooktops. Quartz resins can react to high heat, so set hot cookware on a trivet before you set it down.
Quartz resists coffee and juice stains, while sealed granite relies on fast cleanup for the same win. Both surfaces can scratch under grit or knives. Use cutting boards for prep and place felt pads under small appliances with metal feet. Simple habits keep edges sharp and surfaces smooth.
-
Edge choice affects both look and durability. Eased and quarter-round edges soften corners and help limit chips in busy spaces. A small bevel adds a clean shadow line that looks great under task lighting.
Decorative profiles such as ogee suit classic designs and statement islands. Undermount stainless and composite sinks pair cleanly with both materials and make wipe-downs fast. Farm sinks look great when the cabinet and counter include proper support. Plan faucet holes, air gaps, and dispensers at templating so installation day runs smoothly.

Most projects follow a simple path. We schedule a template visit, capture exact measurements, and confirm overhangs, seams, and edge details. You approve the layout, then we fabricate in the shop.
We can install small vanities in a single visit. Full kitchens need more time, especially with multiple cutouts for sinks, cooktops, or outlets. Undermount sinks need a cure time before a plumber reconnects fixtures.
Clear counters and create a path so the crew can protect floors and set slabs safely. We finish with a clean surface and a quick walkthrough.

Price depends on material, color rarity, slab yield, thickness, edge profile, number of cutouts, backsplash design, and any demo or plumbing coordination. Large islands and complex seams raise labor.
Many homeowners place premium material in the kitchen and pick value lines for secondary baths or laundry rooms. We provide a line-item estimate that separates material, fabrication, and installation so you can see where the dollars go and tune the plan without guesswork.
-
Wipe daily with a soft cloth and a few drops of mild dish soap or a stone-safe spray. Rinse and dry for a streak-free finish. Skip vinegar, citrus, bleach, and abrasive powders because they can dull the surface or attack resin binders.
Set hot pans on trivets, use cutting boards for prep, and place felt pads under small appliances with metal feet. Reapply sealer on granite when water stops beading. Simple maintenance keeps both materials looking new.
-
Full-height backsplashes in quartz or granite create a seamless look and make wipe-downs quick. Many kitchens pair stone counters with a tile backsplash for texture and budget control.
Large quartz panels can line shower walls when rated for wet use and installed over proper substrates. Natural stone floors add character in entries and halls, but they need the right finish and a steady care routine. We help match surfaces to room traffic, moisture, and sunlight.
