Flooring 101 : All About Carpeting

Carpets are a big part of any home. They provide insulation, soundproofing, and are even used as an artistic medium to compliment or ground your home design. Carpets can also be beneficial to your health. They are known to improve indoor air quality and are even linked to improved heart health.

Carpet Construction

Carpet is a floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing. The pile is generally either made from natural materials such as wool or nylon, or from synthetic materials such as polypropylene and olefin.

The carpet is manufactured in lengths of around 10 yards (9 meters) which are typically joined together to form larger pieces. If the backing material has been glued to the upper layer, it is called “tufted carpet”. Carpeting can be installed on top of existing flooring materials like wood, vinyl and linoleum; on bare ground; or over a concrete slab that has been treated with a vapor retarder and underlayment.

Choosing Carpeting

There are many different types of carpeting that can be chosen from. It is important to consider the type of flooring that will be on top of the carpet as this can affect its durability and design options. Also, it is important to consider how much traffic there will be in your home as this may affect which type of carpeting you should choose.
